This week started with an important message concerning our Friday 31st July session at Mexborough Foodbank. The announcement was as follows.
On Friday, we had our busiest session on record with 44 food parcels given out across the local area (mostly home delivered in Mexborough, Denaby, Conisbrough & Swinton).
Our supplies are currently very low due to unprecedented demand and we are now having to apply much stricter conditions to eligibility for food parcels, especially now that the Government’s shielding restrictions have ended from 1st Aug.
We have a duty to ensure that food parcels are prioritised where they are most needed.
We don’t want to judge how people spend their money and budget their finances. However, we must ensure that people are receiving the full support available and are being closely supported to budget better for food and other essentials as the challenging times continue.
From now on, we CANNOT accept ‘self-referrals’ (which was introduced as a special measure at the start of lockdown) & referrals MUST come via our approved community partners –
- Citizens Advice Doncaster Borough
- St Leger Homes Doncaster
- Doncaster Council
- Communities South Area Team
- Community First Credit Union Ltd
- Doncaster Wellbeing
- Mexborough Family Hub
- Denaby & Conisbrough Family Hub
- Creative Support Doncaster
- Doncaster College and University Centre
- Doncaster Children’s Services Trust
- Aspire Drug and Alcohol Services
If you are in need of a food parcel in the future, please speak with your key worker at any of the above agencies who will then make a referral is us via email. Alternatively, we strongly recommend that you contact Citizens Advice in Mexborough on 01709 572402 to make an appointment to go through your finances and provide budgeting & practical support. CA will refer you to Mex Foodbank for a food parcel if they feel you are eligible.
Please note – simply saying that you are claiming Univeral Credit does noes automatically entitle you to receive a food parcel. We are fully aware that UC payments do not allow much financial flexibility but there should be enough left over to purchase the basic food and personal hygiene essentials. If you are struggling, then contact Citizens Advice without delay.
Huge thanks to our hardworking volunteers and community partners Mexborough Christian Community Church & Food Aware CIC. You know who you are. We cannot support others less fortunate without your ongoing support.
Thanks once again to New York Bakery Co. Bagels for their latest donation kindly coordinated by Cllr Ken Wyatt.
